Siberian State Medical University (SSMU) is one of the leading medical universities in Russia. For many years it has been in top five of Russian medical universities according to the rating compiled by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation.
SSMU was founded in 1878 as a medical faculty of Tomsk Imperial University. Here a lot of scientific schools were established that brought fame to the Russian medical science; their traditions have been preserved to the present day.
Throughout the university history more than 60 000 doctors and pharmacists have been trained; more than 40 000 health care specialists have upgraded their skills. Among SSMU graduates there are over 700 Doctors of Science, 42 Academicians, 25 Corresponding members of AMS of the USSR and Russia, 2 Presidents of AMS, 15 State prize laureates and 1 Health Care Minister of the Russian Federation.
Nowadays SSMU is a large research and education complex that includes 6 faculties (Medical, Pharmaceutical, Pediatric, Medical-Biological, Behavioral Medicine and Management, Advanced Training and Professional Development) , 2 research institutes, more than 30 interdisciplinary research and education centers and laboratories, multi-disciplinary university clinics, the biggest in the region scientific and medical library etc. More than 80% of the faculty have academic degrees and ranks.

Knowledge of Russian sufficient for attending lectures and writing papers. It is possible to take a preparatory 1-year Russian language course at Tomsk Polytechnic University (http://iie.tpu.ru/en/3_russian_language_courses.php ) or any other accredited preparatory language courses
